I sent a squad to a neighboring tower. Two of my dwarfs survived and came back. But they came back DOA. But this time they have a cause of death: COLD.

I'm guessing that your custom map settings dropped temperatures low enough that most creatures cannot survive outside for very long. Perhaps the army movement code is applying these temperatures for the duration of travel, but the results are not fatal until the creature sets foot on-site? Disabling temperature calculations caused the remainder of the invading to force to arrive alive. |
