Summary | 0001638: Dust from a cave-in referred to as "boiling magma" |
Description | In adventure mode I visited a prior fortress and pulled pulled a lever designed to seal Hell with cave-in. It worked, but when I was caught in the dust cloud, I was alarmed to see it described as "boiling magma". |
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Build a support.
2. Build a lever nearby.
3. Link them.
4. Carve out rock above support so nothing else is holding it up.
5. Abandon fortress.
6. Return in adventure mode.
7. Pull lever.
8. Step into the cloud if necessary. |
Additional Information | The cloud is not look-able, so I can't tell what it's called in dwarf mode. Despite that alarming description adventure mode, I was unharmed except for being knocked around. |

Do you happen to have a save from before you pulled the lever?
It's possible that the "boiling magma" was mislabeled magma mist, which would be expected from a cave-in into magma. |
To clarify, there was no actual magma involved. Perhaps mentioning Hell gave the wrong impression. I reproduced this in a perfectly ordinary 6 level deep fortress. Do you still want a save? I can easily set one up. |

I've been able to pretty consistently get boiling magma.
Also there's an insane amount of pressure from that cave in - I managed to get pushed up the stairs somehow. |

I noticed the other day that when a cave in happened, the dust was 'yellow sand' even though the room the cave in happened in was entirely composed of rock. Yellow sand was present elsewhere on the map, but no where nearby. Cave ins must be taking their dust-type from somewhere. How the source is determined is probably dependent on the biome, or nearness to certain materials, or something. |

It's an old bug. See 0001206 and my comments there. |

I'm guessing "clouds" of cave-in dust are being incorrectly interpreted as a GAS rather than as a SOLID_POWDER when printing the messages. By comparison, "bursts" of material show up correctly. |
I saw it in Fortress mode as well, it would make sense that it was a mis-labeling of dust |
Isn't this acknowledged yet? Everyone knows about this bug, and its fairly easy to reproduce. |
Confirmed against disassembly in 0.34.11 to be using the GAS state name instead of the SOLID_POWDER state name.
The problem seems to be that the code for being caught inside a flow (including miasma, smoke, dragonfire, webs, etc.) is using the same basic code for dust, vapor, and gas clouds (so it can better generalize logic for stuff like inflicting syndromes), and it doesn't check which state name to use.
By comparison, the "caught in a burst of [material]" message (which happens under totally different circumstances) properly takes the material state into account. |
I had this happen to me for the first time. 0.34.11
Fortress mode, building a floor diagonally adjacent to a support, so it collapsed.
Building material was Cobaltite blocks, construction was in midair aboveground. There was red sand elsewhere on the surface, but not where he was. Legendary dwarf, nothing but bruises after falling 2 or 3 levels.
The Glassmaker is caught in a cloud of boiling magma!
