Summary | 0002919: Doctor stuck trying to treat caged patient, who dies of thirst |
Description | First off, I'd like to apologize for the lack of certainty or detail in this report. This happened a few days ago before I knew this bug tracker existed.
One of my soldiers must have fractured a bone in combat and needed treatment. My chief medical dwarf, who was an inexperienced bone setter but I enabled the labor, took him down to one of the animal stockpiles and placed this hurt dwarf in a cage. The doctor proceeded to try and set the bone, but I had no plaster anywhere in my fortress and no progress was made. Eventually, the dwarf died of thirst, sitting in a cage in my butchering room with the doctor still standing over him. |

Generally, dwarves only get put in cages as a result of dwarven justice. Did you fail any mandates recently? |

The caged dwarf was a full-time soldier, which makes him pretty immune to failing mandates, and he did have wounds that needed treating. I did not see the doctor take the dwarf down to the cage, just him standing over it trying to apply a cast.
Also, I am fairly certain that I had a traction bench in my hospital, but it would make sense to cage the dwarf if a traction bench could not be found. |

What makes you sure? 0001521 involved a soldier failing a mandate. Please check your z -> Justice screen and look through the soldier's combat logs to find out how he got the broken bone.
Also, I am fairly certain that I had a traction bench in my hospital, but it would make sense to cage the dwarf if a traction bench could not be found.
I don't think that would make sense at all, as cages don't immobilize, and in any event Toady has never mentioned using cages (or restraints) for medical purposes.

I just had this happen again. I believe it is caused by a hurt dwarf setting off a cage trap, and was just complicated by the doctor trying to treat the hurt dwarf. Close the issue if possible. |
