Summary | 0000347: Rendering a stack of fat yields individual tallow items rather than a stack |
Description | Not sure if this is by design, but fat and tallow no longer stack, which really tends to clutter up the place and make tons of small tallow-based meals. |

Notes |
The tallow part is accurate. I haven't seen it with fat, though -- butchering always produces a single stack. The fat stack gets rendered one piece at a time, so maybe that's why you were seeing partial fat stacks? |
Yes, that's why the fat stacks were partial. |
have that too. Stacks of,say, 19 fat are turned into 19 stacks of 1 tallow. Not necessarily a bug, but a feature that causes more hauling jobs. I also like to cycle between cooking and rendering in the same kitchen and now i know why that was so ineffective - the stack of fat is hauled away with only 1 unit processed into tallow for every task. since 10 of any tallow fit in one barrel, the clutter is not that big though. |
Even if it is intentional, it causes problems. I've had my food workshop I set up specially for fat/tallow get clogged up with a few fat barrels in a hanfdul of squares and masses of 1 bear tallow in every other tile in the stockpile, and for some reason the dwarves will be incapable of moving barrels to the stockpile to put all the single globs of tallow taking up all the spaces in the stockpile in, while my butchers and kitchens fill up with fat and tallow.
Yes I have extra empty barrels, no they aren't forbidden, there are no burrows or locked doors or anything stopping them from moving about. |
This is incredibly annoying when you manage to get a really huge stack of fat - I butchered a forgotten beast and got a stack of 87 fat, which is enough to clutter the workshop all the way to ☼CLT☼ and make the rendering task take 10 times as long, and it still processes only a single unit at a time. At this rate, it's going to take 10 years to process all of this fat, and I'll be spammed with job cancellations the whole time due to 0002161.
There's also the issue that the individual stacks of tallow are nearly useless for making prepared meals, so tallow is really only useful for soap now. |
This no longer appears to be an issue in 0.31.25 - a single job will now render the entire stack of fat at once, but it will still produce a bunch of individual (unstacked) units of tallow. |
The individual tallow items warrant keeping this open, I think. |
