DescriptionPart of the reason I put this as such a low priority is because of the fact that I probably modded in the ability to make Elephants myself, making it not a problem for Vanilla DF.
I had my elephants eating just fine (and in fact outcompeting every other creature, it seems), but then I made them War Elephants. They are starving to death even though I have them outside in a nice area full of grasses, and at first I thought it a duplicate of the 'tame animals can't eat fast enough' bug. However as I watched and checked back every so often, I noticed that they were not even eating the grass. I put them indoors to see if they could eat indoor 'grass'. They will not do so, even though they are starving while other animals in similar situations immediately eat a ton of grass and fill themselves up.
I searched and could not find a reference to this exact problem, leading me to believe that I most likely, long ago, modded in the ability to have War Elephants (though it is realistic: they did exist). So anyway, when making a creature a war creature, it seems to remove the ability to eat, making the creature quickly starve to death. Hence this bug report. I think that is all.
Steps To ReproduceGet an animal that grazes.
Go to the raws and give it the ability to become a war animal.
In-game, capture or bring along one of these creatures.
Make the animal a war animal. I recommend elephants.
Place animal anywhere, or allow to roam.
Watch for signs of the animal eating grasses. Likely observe no such feeding behavior.
Cry as your precious war animal starves to death regardless of the abundant food around it.
Repeat ad nauseum.

Tame Elephants are currently bugged, and will die of starvation while eating, because they can't eat fast enough. Did you try your experiment with war goats or any other small grazing animal?
