Summary | 0005816: The last single bone from a stack is unusable refuse |
Description | When a stack of bones is brought to a craftwdarf's workshop to create bone bolts, one bone at a time is taken from the stack, with the stack size shown in square brackets. When the stack gets down to one bone left, it no longer shows a size, and this last single bone cannot be used. The dwarf has to go get another stack instead, and these single bones accumulate in the workshop forever. |
Steps To Reproduce | Do not make a refuse pile. Slaughter something large enough to give bones. Make bone bolts, on repeat. |
Additional Information | This did not happen in 0.31.x. It's been happening in all 0.34.x versions so far. At first it was overshadowed by the inappropriate random naming of bones, which was fixed -- but this behavior still remains. |

If you look at the items in workshop using (t) view - is there "TSK" label next to the bone name?
I remember something like this happening back in 0.31.12, but it was from killing a cave fish man and allowing it to rot - the corpse rotted into a stack of bones (instead of a skeleton) and said bones could be used for crafting, but once it got down to one bone it was no longer usable. |

Yeah, getting this myself, it seems to only be the bones of sentients and pets and other things that can`t be butchered that leave behind single bones after the rest get used to craft.
Edit: No, there`s an unnamed raven woman bone in there too. So not all are named, but yeah, things that can`t be butchered goblins and animal people.

I can confirm this (vanilla DF). I notice it mostly for sentients (megabeasts) and some butchered animals, as Videspirit mentioned.

It also works with shells. I have several custom creatures with a shearable shell. When the stack gets down to a single item it just sits there until I Dump it. |
Now that you mention it, I do mostly notice this with things like dark stranglers (in Fortress Defense mod).
However, my current vanilla fort has two unusable bones in its workshop:
Eagle Corpse bone
Stray Giant Sparrow bone
The former is from an undead creature that attacked me. The latter is from an animal brought by the elves, and butchered to become that season's dinner entrée. So it's not just sentients and un-butcherables. |

I've noticed this too. For me, they are not cluttering the workshop, but the refuse stockpile. Single bones are left and not used by crafter.
I haven't found a pattern yet. Most are from butchered animals bought from caravans, but there are a couple from hunted animals in there too. It doesn't seem to happen for every animal, or there would be a lot more unusable bones left over.

It happens to fortress raised animals too, I got single item pig bone stacks and yaks and what so ever, which fill up my refuse pile.
The interesting part is, the all accumulate in my topside refuse pile which is free for all. My indoor bone/horn/shell pile is ordered to take from this one but the single item stacks stay topside. |

I have a potentially interesting data point on this: I tend to separate my refuse stockpiles into ones that accept "bones" (for the craftdwarf's workshop) and ones that accept "body parts" (for the butcher's workshop). A stack of "stray ram bones [5]" gets stored in the former, while an (unbutcherable and unusable by the craftsdwarf) "stray ram bone" gets stored in the latter.
If I didn't know any better (and I don't know any better), I would guess that the game treats the stack of multiple bones/wool as a (butchered) bone/wool item, while it treats a single bone/wool as a (not-butchered) body part (like a limb that got chopped off). |

I've been having this same problem in 34.11. The bones keep stacking back into the supply pile for my workshops. I've just been dumping them to keep the stockpile clear.
I think this also happens to teeth, too, because I've accumulated a huge amount of unusable stacks of deer teeth. One item per stack and they can't be used for anything. I'm trying to design a refuse disposal pit that'll flush the contents into magma because of all this. |
this may be the same as mine, i have a large amount of single stack items that started out as single stacks due to fighting and whatnot, alot of unicorn teeth and tiger teeth that are unusable at the moment |

I really like this bug! One thing that should be noted is that the "unusable" stacks ARE useable for strange moods, thanks to this bug I'm always sure to have some bones and shells free if the need arises. :) |
It looks like something similar is happening with teeth. |

This appears to be fixed in v0.40.05. Single bones are now reported just as a bone, not a stack of [1], and remain usable for creating bolts and bone crossbows. Sheared wool is also being processed completely (though there may still be stack size issues there). Horn crafting used an entire stack as well (didn't have any teeth stacks to test). |
All right, closing this. Thanks! If anyone can reproduce this in v0.40.05+, please reopen this and/or PM me on the forums. |
