Summary | 0007716: Cats jumping/falling down central stairwell |
Description | I have received several combat reports from cats colliding with the ground right next to my central stairway; the only logical conclusion is that they are falling down the stairwell. The stairway is 3x3 with no open space, so if they are climbing they're doing it on an up/down stair tile. The cats are pastured in a 3 tile ring around the stairwell (the stairwell tiles are not included in the pasture). They seem to only land in tiles diagonally-adjacent to the corners of the stairs, so I suppose it's possible they were attempting a corner-to-corner jump. The falls seem to consistently be 4 z-levels, though one kitten did explode into pieces after a much longer fall. |

You would think, with Legendary Climber, they would be able to grab on to a wall... |
They're pastured in a ring. I think it's very possible two of them are trying to jump across from each other and colliding mid-air, which would cause them both to lose their velocity via the projectile code. |

Would like to add to this. It's also possible that this is related to this bug: 0007745. This bug is where certain cliff walls act like they're climbable, but drop the climber after he goes up one z-level. This would have the exact same effect as what you're noticing. Either way, a save would've been useful.

Possibly related to 0007574; both involve creatures whose movements have been constrained by designated boundaries. Several cats managed to collide with stationary minecarts on the levels below. |
Is it possible that the cats are fighting, causing them to dodge into the stairwell? |

Maybe, but unlikely. I've seen no combat reports mentioning a cat fight--they always just start with the cat hitting the ground or a stationary minecart. |

I don't know if it's related, but after watching for a few minutes, I've noticed that cats pastured in a ring around a stairway regularly move into the stairway tiles, at which point they are outside their pasture, so they start to wander away. This appears to happen in the absence of dwarves (one of the long-standing ways for animals to escape a pasture). |
