Summary | 0007940: Strange teleportation when sleeping/waiting in dark tower (and a few other odd things) |
Description | Well, this one is strange and possibily unreproducible outside of my save.
To start with, I tried to wait one hour in an attempt to get three of the kids to snap out of it (doesn't actually work) and found myself in a room that I definetly wasn't in before I did wait/sleep. However, when I explored around, I found some odd things, such as a goblin corpse embedded into the wall of the room I found myself in, the layout being completely not what I remember it being, and in the prison sections, there are dislodged doors and mechanisms from broken levers.
I did smash some doors in earlier, which might explain the knocked out doors and deconstructed levers.
It's still playable just fine, just confusing because I shouldn't have teleported to some random room in the tower. |
Steps To Reproduce | What led to the strangeness happening is unknown, but heres the steps to create whatever is going on.
1. load save http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9347 [^]
2. Memorize the layout of what I've already explored, take screenshots if you want.
3. Wait/sleep any number of hours, tried one hour and 8 hours, same effect every single time.
4. Realize that you aren't where you were before you waited.
5. explore. |

I moved somewhat and had the same result, teleported somewhere random (well, where I wasn't previously) in the tower.
Interestingly, waiting a second time doesn't teleport me again.
I haven't tested yet whether this happens in other dark towers, with or without companions.
Also, while I have observed the other entities randomly being placed when I wait before, I've never been randomly teleported to some other place in the tower.
I suspect that units may be cloning themselves because a troll spinner that I killed respawned in the same place that the corpse is.
I've had similar things occur in a Vault that i was visiting, including corpse in wall, completely different layout, and most annoyingly, disappearance of the spoiler i intended to kill and any loot :< |
I'm positive that another report also mentioned corpses embedded in walls, but I can't find it. |
I was actually still in the tower, it's just that the section I was teleported to wasn't directly connected to the hallways and instead was accessed by going around though one of the troll pits that the first part ends in.
Also, when I tried waiting in the first section again, I got teleported again :/ |

Here's another one, this time in 40.08. This one is somewhat different though in that I didn't do any waiting, I had only killed some enemies, decided to leave, and then came back about a month later.
The corpse just north of me is a goblin I had killed about a month ago, and there's a piece of clothing embedded in a cell wall further north. Theres a few other corpses embedded in the wall in the prision area on the same level.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9386 [^]
I've also been seeing that wierd 'I attacked me' thing from the trolls talking, but that's a completely separate bug.
Edit: Oh yeah, there were a couple mechanisms laying around

Okay, I've found this strange stuff again in 40.09. I swear that part of the tower is actually shifted off of the square that the tower is on. I'd love to be able to use DFhack reveal here....
I didn't do sleep or wait, but I did have to go in a roundabout way to get to the disconnected section, so it may have offloaded. No corpses in walls yet since I just got into that section, but there are mechanisms on the ground and a statue embedded in the wall.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9438 [^]
Edit: Theres a corpse of an elven prisioner that I killed earlier in a wall two rooms to the right, even the clothes teleported.
Edit2: Theres a troll corpse in the next room from the save that's embedded in a wall.
Edit3: Looks like the entire thing changed configuration, even the entrance is a different layout.
can confirm this. I found myself on top of a dark spire at one point. |
Another bit of info. I used DFhack to do exterminate on the trolls near a dark tower to reduce lag (there were over 700 close to where my adventurer was). Tried sleeping one hour and poof, the trolls respawned.
I've also noticed this with cats in towns. |
The teleportation and reorganization of dark towers doesn't happen anymore, but the reloading of dead units still happens. |

Bump
The reorganization doesn't happen anymore in 40.13, but the reloading of dead units still does.
Footkerchief, could you change the title to match?
Also, I tested a little and while I did see two corpses with the same name, the positions aren't always the same.
What would you like the new summary to be? I can't tell if "reloading of dead units" means corpses appearing in weird places, or people coming back to life. |
The coming back to life, except not as zombies, basically respawning. It doesn't seem to be all of them, just some of them. I'll have to use DFhack to reveal map and use the exterminate command to see which ones do respawn.
The other part of the origional post with the reconfiguring of the dark tower and corpses in odd places isn't happening anymore.
Related to 0008334 in the fact that it's also about goblin sites and populations respawning after the site is offloaded. |
Is there a significant difference from 0008334? |

About the only difference between what I'm seeing is that not all goblins are respawning (or resurrecting) and I'm pretty sure the trolls are respawning as well in the dark tower. Theres also a significant difference in that this bug is about the dark tower structure specifically while the one you're linking is about the troll pits. Otherwise it's the same phenomenon with respawning, it's probably even caused by the same root bug.
It's harder to tell whether a specific troll actually is respawning on sleep/wait, might give trolls the ability to speak so that they get names.
I haven't done the deeper testing using DFhack yet.

Okay, since this report's original problem has disappeared, let's consolidate discussion at 0008334. |

It's still around, just had it happen when me, my two regular companions, and 19 rescued kids decided to wait a few hours until nightfall.
Let me get a new save set up for pre and post event.
I guess it seemed to have disappeared because I generally avoided waiting/sleeping to, well, avoid this.
Edit: I've got it reproducing with my two regular companions, so I'll use that.
Edit2: Actually, I've already got a save uploaded that can be used for the pre-reconfiguring.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9813 [^] Pre-reconfiguring, sleep/wait however long. I know the filename is for a different bug, but it's the same world and same dark spire I'm observing it in.
Also, when I came back to that same spire some time later, it had reverted back to the way it was. |

I noticed this with the ruin of a generated dwarf fortress.
If I walk to the ruin, rather than travel there, I get the same layout that I would if I slept there.
So, travel there - get one layout; walk or sleep there - get another layout.
(There was a 3rd layout at some point. This fortress was ruined by a forgotten beast. I killed it and left it's shell in the room. That room is gone and the shell is in a wall with both layouts mentioned above. Strangely it is in the one area that is the same for both layouts.)
I'll try to upload a save later.
Edit: Reclaiming the ruin in fortress mode gives the same layout as travelling there in adventure mode.
Edit: One difference is that the above ground structure has a roof in adventure mode but does not in fortress mode.
Edit: Save file: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10097 [^]
This is after having walked there from the west. Notice the trading post is on the south side of the center. When you arrive here from the travel screen here it is on the north. Almost every thing below is in different a place, except the bedroom area.
(The beast I mentioned above is still alive down there in this save. In one of the farthest west bedrooms.)

Yeah that one is 0006955. This one and that report are related, might even have the same root cause. |
