Summary | 0008322: Dwarf children can teleport into caverns now |
Description | I recently breached the first cavern layer for underground grass. There is exactly one entrance to it from the fortress, which is at the top of the cavern. Wanting to limit exposure to underground nasties, I immediately built a fortification at the end of the hall. Somehow, a dwarven child managed to make the 3 z-level fall unscathed to the cavern floor. Ok, I thought, maybe the kid somehow managed to sneak through before the fortification got built. So I installed a door right in front of the fortification, and set it to locked. Despite this, another TWO children found their way to the cavern floor. I'm somewhat awash in children, so I'm not terribly sorry to see them go, but I'm worried that next time it might be someone actually useful translocating to explore the dark depths of the earth. |
Steps To Reproduce | |
Additional Information | Children's names are: "Child" Dodokkezat, "Child" Atirsokan, and "Child" Enkosrigoth (deceased, under the miasma cloud on the bottom level, NW of the giant olm). Save here (note: was using phoebus' graphic pack for 40.12 if that matters): http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9745 [^] |

There's no physical way for them to get into the caverns. They have to pass through a locked door and dematerialize to pass through a constructed fortification, only then to climb down into the caverns. I'll keep an eye out for more children in the caves, but I had a similar issue with another fort where my entire military somehow managed to get behind a locked door and subsequently starved to death because I, rightly or wrongly, assumed there would be no way for them to get into the locked room which contained almost literally nothing.
edit: additionally, I just checked the kids, and neither of the (living) ones have any "Climber" ranks listed. I would assume if they managed to clamber down, they would have gained at least dabbling.

What about jumping through the fortification, like 0008160? |
That would probably do it, although how they made it to the ground is a mystery still. I have since walled off the fortification entirely, and so far no more units have found their way into the caverns |

Bad news, another child has managed to find their way into the cavern. Currently have a constructed wall blocking a locked door blocking a fortification blocking a drop. The wall has been there for quite a while, and I did a sweep prior to this for other dwarven children, finding none. Is the kid somehow jumping/dodging through walls and then just "pathing" through blocked terrain until it finds open space? Regardless, the child passed through a solid wall this time, so I'm not sure how that works |

Could you post up a save of that one? This one sounds like it's near impossible to catch in the act, at least not without observing every kid simultaneously, so, any save is going to help.

Here's the save, kid's name is "Child" Kebnoddom, currently in the first cavern. As said before, there is literally no access to those caverns from the surface or from my fortress proper. Also, the kid may be berserking in the save, so that might make him easier to find.

Just found ANOTHER kid who's phased down (seasons after the last one died). Tellingly, only children are performing this magical feat, I have seen zero adults downstairs |

Hm, are there any common denominators here? Like are they all in the same burrow?
They are not assigned to any burrow |
I have an idea. You know the up/down stairs at the bottom there? Maybe change those to up stairs? Or maybe put hatches on the level above and forbid all of them. My hypothesis is that MAYBE they are somehow diagonally slipping through.
I know it makes no sense, but that's the only idea I've got for the cause outside of random teleporting.
Or maybe assign them to a civillian alert burrow? which btw you should make. VERY useful for those 'OSHI!, everybody inside NOW!' moments or keeping civillians out of harms way during a siege. Just to sort of eliminate anything that would cause or prevent this odd bug. |

Link service: there is 0008383 "Flying/swimming creatures can move vertically through diagonal gaps containing down-stairways". With climbing in game, maybe just any units can get through these diagonal two-level passages now. |
