Summary | 0001426: freshly created squads train in 'civilian mode'
Description | I got a wave of immigrants, and since my military was pretty skimpy, I decided to recruit most of them. Just to be clear on the exact steps I took while recruiting (since there's a couple different ways to get there), I assigned a new dwarf to a vacant Militia Captain position on the nobles screen. Then on the military screen, created a squad under that captain, and added the new immigrant recruits to it. Next I gave them a barracks to train at, actually two weapon racks in the same room, both assigned to them. As I was preparing to fiddle with the 'Active/Training' orders before actually activating them, I noticed a congregation in the barracks. Upon further investigation, the new squad members were showing up in civie mode to train, individual combat drills only. While some of them continued to do their default hauling labors, training seemed to have quite high priority as many of them can be found training there even when there are lots of jobs to do. They feed themselves and rest normally (in a good way). Since they never enter 'military mode' they don't get unhappy thoughts from switching. Even more interesting, I checked and they are, in fact, gaining skill training in this way. They seem to be training almost as we would all like them to except for a couple things. 1) Only individual combat drills, no demonstrations etc 2) They're in civie mode 3) They are supposed to be inactive. I hadn't yet activated them, so they should be doing anything military. Freeing the barracks' causes them to resume civilian life normally. All this provides a nice workaround for those who can't get their military dwarves to actually gain any skill, but it's certainly not working as its supposed to.
Steps To Reproduce | 1) assign a dwarf to militia captain (on the nobles screen) 2) create a squad under him (on the military screen) 3) add squad members 4) give them a barracks to train (I also have 'store individual equip' and 'store squad equip' but not 'sleep' if that matters) 5) do not activate the squad into training mode 6) watch them train anyway in civie mode

I believe that this is intended behaviour. Civies who are a member of a squad can choose to do individual drills in lieu of other labors. I believe there is a known issue with citizen-soldiers refusing to do anything else, though. |

Yep this is an issue thats going around. At the moment basicly off duty means personal training of teh dwarves preferance, which basicly results in them doing personal weapons drills. When set to train they try and do group training which at the moment is a bit bugged in the blind leading the blind manner. This is either a child of 0000428 or related to 0000605 |

I've been noticing this and I've been using it to my advantage as it seems more reliable than the "more efficient" training methods. If it isn't intended behavior then I hope it doesn't get fixed BEFORE the rest of the military fixes. |

Yeah, it's intended that they train on their idle time, though maybe they are a bit enthusiastic about it. There was an associated bug there (0000605 and related) that is fixed for 0.31.06. Bugs with organized training have not yet been addressed as of right now. |
