Summary | 0000322: Dusting of mud makes plump helmets brown
Description | a farm must have mud or it can't be used plump helmets ready to harvest are brown because of the mud plump helmets are normally purple I haven't tested yet for other crops but I expect this will hold true of all crops, they will all be muddy, and will all be colored brown until harvest. While this is minor, this should maybe be fixed.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. build a farm 2. plant something 3. observe the color at harvest

This is probably intentional behavior of plants growing in mud, but beside from that, Farms should not require mud to be used if on soil, the fact that it is required regardless of ground type is the bug, and was one of the first to be caught for obvious reasons. |

since farms pretty much require mud to operate, I would still consider this a bug, if very minor. It's worth noting that underground trees which near as I can tell always grow in mud appear to retain their natural color despite mud splatter. |

Considering real life this isn't really proper. Plants don't grow covered in mud if they are planted in muddy soil... |

okay, some updates to this concept Dimple Cups growing on mud are brown -- normal color is blue Quarry Bushes growing on mud are brown -- normal color is white Sweet Pods growing on mud are brown -- normal color is red Cave Wheat growing on mud is brown -- normal color is white Plump Helmet growing on mud is brown -- normal color purple Pig Tails growing on mud are brown -- normal color is white Tower-Cap on mud is White Muddy Fungiwood on mud is Yellow So there's two natural subterranean plants both growing in mud, both apparently allowed to retain their natural coloration. Okay, all done testing the indoor crops. So basically, all underground farm crops get colored brown from the mud. yet naturally growing stuff not growing on a farm seems to get to keep its natural color. |

It seems that underground shrubs and "trees" (young or mature) keep their proper color now, though they previously did not. Sweet pods on a muddy farm plot are also brown. I think cave wheat is, too, but I wasn't paying much attention there. |

And that's about as exhaustive as you can get on that subject. I've noted other weird splatter behavior with structures as well but that's another subject. here on the subject of plants, as hilarious as I may find it to think of my farmers as a bunch of filthy mud farmers, it's rather decidedly unfair to force all dwarf grown crops to always be brown due to the simple fact that farms must be placed on mud to function. It seems splatter makes no real distinction between splatter that is on the floor, and splatter that is covering objects that are in that tile, even objects that were added to that tile after the spatter was formed. |

I think it's great that with all of DF's interface shortcomings, we're outraged when the plump helmets are the wrong color ;p Throw in my vote to bring back colored crops. It would be interesting if the dwarves would change colors when covered in mud, vomit, or blood. |

The main reason I even bothered to report this one is it's basically a quirky behavior of the new spatter/contaminants system. With underground crops, you are required to plant them in mud, so it's pretty silly to be recoloring them just because they're growing in mud. Even if it's patched back so that they can be planted in soil again, I still don't agree with farm crops being recolored by mud spatter. Now if they get coated with blood or vomit, that might be a different thing. |

Maybe there should be an automated Farmer's Workshop task to clean harvested crops, or something. That'd be more a feature request, though. |

I've noticed this as well, but it looks to me like the mud covering is removed as soon as a dwarf harvests the plant. By which I mean, plump helmets in the field are brown, but as soon as they're picked they turn purple. |

This also happened in 40D. Normally you could only grow things like tower caps in mud. Mud made everything brown. Tower caps aren't brown, they're actually green! If you have natural, non-muddy soil and hit water in 40D, tower caps will slowly grow, and they will grow green. Similar sort of deal with farm fields because in order to grow anything you have to make the ground muddy, so everything looks brown until its harvested. |

I've notice this too, but I didnt consider it a bug. There plenty of foodstuff that need be washed before you can eat it. I never notice it in 40d though. |

You don't need mud to farm underground, unless you are farming on stone floors. Also, due to 0001573 , if you dislike mud you can wait for something to grow on the stone then pave over them. After deconstructing you will have a natural soil floor. I'm not sure if removing mud from an underground farm will actually cause the farm to deconstruct - I think that was another bug that may have been fixed. |

ptb_ptb, you used to have to muddy stone to farm. Soil didn't work for subterranean plants. That bug, I'm just conjecturing here, used to hinder farms, or something. This bug is 5 years old, you know. Stuff was... different back then. |
