Summary | 0006194: dwarves being murdered
Description | i was just wondering if this is intentional or if maybe a bug but... anytime that i fail to get a mandate met because of something like make flutes 3 etc, i setup the make ==== crafts from whichever material i decide but sometimes they dont make the flutes in time, next thing i know it has someone has been found dead and when i look at justice a random dwarf has been chosen to take the fall for the production and subsequently gets murdered, is there a way to turn off this behavior?
Steps To Reproduce | have a mandate fail to complete

What you are observing is Dwarven Justice - if you ignore a Noble's mandate, a random dwarf (generally one with the appropriate skills to have been able to fulfill it) will be punished with Imprisonment, Hammerstrikes, or a Beating. If you have no jails, then it will always be a Beating, and Beatings have an alarming tendency to be lethal due to 0001016 and/or 0002907. Part of this bug (dwarves killed by justice being "found dead" and triggering a murder case) is also covered by 0005203. |

the thing is i do have cages setup with a steel chain, bed, table, chair, food stockpile and engraved stone, it has only had someone chained once, the rest of the time my military has a job saying beat criminal. its not even my hammerer just a random military unit |

Beatings are supposed to be given out by your Sheriff or Captain of the Guard (or member of his squad) - if you don't have a sheriff, it's possible the game is just picking a random soldier to do it instead. |

idk lol but its weird seeing a random recruit chase down a random civilian and attack them because they didnt make a flute on time, i try to meet all demands by the nobles but with random effects like toys or instruments u just gotta give it to the crafters and see what they make, but again i still think death for not making a flute is a bit much for a disciplinary action |

It may seem odd, but right now it's normal (and expected) for dwarves to be punished for failing to complete mandates. The fact that said punishments tend to be lethal is already covered by other bugs, as I stated above. |

How about the apparent issue of [j]ustice-enabled cages and restraints not being used? I recently had the same issue (violation of production order) with a jail (chains) set up, but the punishment still jumped straight to Beating. |

and the subsequent murder charge never gets dealt with either, all it says is convicted but the dwarf is still walking around free without a beating set for him |

Drazinononda: just because you have jails does not guarantee that all dwarves will be punished with prison time - some crimes legitimately have "Beating" as an allowable choice (generally based on the type of crime and/or the injured party). The only reason this is a problem right now is that beatings are lethal even though they're only supposed to cause minor injuries. |
