I'm not seeing this - I've had my military kill dozens of forgotten beasts and they've had no problem butchering the remains (excluding the inorganic ones, of course) even when they're coated in blood. What type of animal were you killing? |

Reminder sent to: kilakan Can you offer more info on this bug report? Specifically, answer Quietust's question about which animal(s) you were killing? Thanks. |

Encountered this or similar bug in 31.18. My hunter attacks a fox, but runs out of ammo before it is dead. He leaves to reload. Fox dies 5-30 sec later, occasionally after wandering about with broken spine/legs etc. After hunter reloads he/she goes to "Hunt". The fox rots away. Checked and it DID contain "Fox Blood Splatter" the dead body was all but unusable - dwarfs refused to haul it/butcher/dump... It all was happening during rain, outside my fortress, several times over. On an extra note my map never contained more than 3 Foxes. Or any other animals at that. |

Butchering in 31.18 works just fine regardless of how much gore is covering the corpse or in how many pieces the corpse is in. They seem to not butcher ears, noses, or fingers/toes, but everything else is happily butchered. If you have refuse hauling disabled above ground then corpses will just sit outside forever. |

Perhaps the creature's corpse was so small that there was no edible meat on it? |

That would be vermin, but you can't hunt or kill vermin with soldiers. I do have to occasionally clean up my refuse stockpile by tossing all of the "troll left ear" stuff into magma, but all corpses are taken care of automatically. This is in 31.18 by the way, I have yet to try out 31.19. Even in 31.16 I had no problems with butchering bloody corpses. |

I'm not talking about vermin - I'm talking about large creatures that happen to be so small that they have no meat on them, such as buzzards and kittens (which often yield nothing but a skull when slaughtered). |

Buzzards can be butchered just fine. Kittens for some reason produce no meat or no bones often times, but they can at least still be butchered and give you a skull. Also kittens can only be butchered if you order them to. If they're a tame or owned animal and they die for any reason other than you ordering them butchered then they can never be butchered. |

Mangled buzzard corpses are often too small to contain any useful meat. A butcher will refuse to butcher a corpse part that won't yield at least one unit of usable material. It has nothing to do with the blood splatter, it's just a matter of the size of the resulting chunks. Tame animals on the other hand can always be slaughtered, even if they won't yield anything useful, which is why a slaughtered kitten just gets you a skull and nothing else. |
