Summary | 0002181: Caged goblin spontaneously bleeds outside its cage
Description | Twice since .05 came out I've seen a mysterious blood spatter appear somewhere it has no business being, from a caged goblin that was not harmed (and certainly not there, at least). I didn't pay attention to the details of the first time (figured it was a fluke -- maybe he got bit by wildlife on the way in or something), but the second time was as follows: Goblin thief traipses along into my cage trap. I promptly take him to the stripping room for processing before being rendered, but he kind of falls to the back of priority in an insanely busy fortress. I forget him. Later, while expanding a reservoir, I notice one of the clay loam tiles forming a wall to my reservoir has bloodspatter attributed to that goblin languishing in my fortress interior. It wasn't there before, and there's no blood tracking to it. (And, again, my dorfs haven't taken him out of the cage yet.) It just sort of appeared. A bit later, a few tiles away, I found another two more. Again, to reiterate, he had been sitting underground in a cage, ignored, for quite a while when this showed up at the surface.
Steps To Reproduce | Don't know. Have to wait for it to happen.

Were the spots of blood appearing at the location he was captured? You should be able to check this by finding the "You've caught a Goblin Thief" announcement and zooming to its location. |

The announcement of his capture is no longer in the announcement list, but I know for sure it's not, because he hit the cage trap right outside my gate, and the blood appeared underwater in the brook some 15 or so tiles to the south, where I had no traps there. (The blood appeared during winter when the water was frozen over next to where I was messing with installing a floodgate and grate.) EDIT: Added screenshots below, on the off chance that it's helpful. The goblin was captured in the cluster of traps in front of the gate, and the blood appeared on the three squares below underground in the second one. Hmm. It might be helpful to upload a save with the gobin still in the cage (the ideal thing would be to catch it while he's bleeding, but I doubt that's possible). http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] edit: oh, it was in the water. Could he have fought with ANYONE before getting caged? If his blood got on a dwarf, they would have washed it off in the brook, causing it to spread through the water. |

Well, I'll be. I made a bad assumption about which goblin it came from. The blood spatters actually are attributed to the corpse of a goblin that had been lying outside the fortress for six months (five of them as a partial skeleton), not the one recently captured. I also do, in fact, have guys that still have his blood on their equipment (his erstwhile executioners), so it's quite possible they tracked it into the iced-over river while they were digging a bit of it out. So my original phrasing of the issue is inaccurate and should either be modified heavily or deleted and resubmitted as an issue of impossibly overgenerous bloodspattering being generated (presumably) from six-month-old bloodstains on the equipment of soldiers who killed the goblin and then not being washed away despite water next to it (which is in-turn connected to running water). Further details: My battle reports show that I had the goblin in question (Nguslu) executed (cage taken outside and him released in the midst of my squad) on 6/12/1052. Save 11: 7/01/1052. Nguslu lying outside the fortress 16 tiles to the north. Corpse is forbidden. There are 3 spatters on the ground near him, and none that I found anywhere near the areas in question. Save 12: 8/28/1052. Still there, now in the form of a partial skeleton. Having checked, at least one squad member, "Mace" Oltarbubnus, does indeed have a spatter of Nguslu's blood on his Iron Chain Leggings. It's probably safe to assume that other guys from the squad that took him down probably have spatters on their equipment too. Save 13: 9/13/1052. Still there, unchanged. Saves 14/15: 10/8/1052 and 10/11/1052. Still there, unchanged. "Mace's" iron chain leggings still have the blood on them, and, again, I presume other spatters remain present on other squad members who participated in the fun. Save 16: 12/18/1052. The blood spatters are now present on the walls of the underground channel between the brook and my well. (I had dug out a bit more of that channel while it was iced, and that is when I assume it occurred.) The corpse is now Claimed again (presumably I noticed it was still lying around Forbidden at this point), but still lying in its spot, close to where I just had another goblin, Utes, executed similarly. Let me know if the save would still be helpful. Damn... that was sloppy of me. No more reporting in wee hours. |

Thanks for investigating that! Yeah, blood and other spatters hang around way too long and find their way into odd places -- that's been previously reported as 0000296 and 0002044. The save probably isn't necessary since this problem is pretty ubiquitous. |
