Summary | 0002352: Seasonal ice melting hangs game for a ridiculously long time
Description | Melting ice is taking a silly amount of time to melt when caused by temperature changes as the result of season progression. I first noticed this on maps with very little water (murky ponds). On such maps, the game will freeze for a few seasons as the ponds thaw on season change. This is usually not a problem. On my current 3x3 temperate ocean map (with maybe 3 z-levels of ocean at most), the melting ocean is hanging my fairly recent gaming machine for long enough to log into Mantis, search for existing bug reports which mention this issue, and then type up this bug report. ...and it's still frozen, churning CPU. I know it will eventually unfreeze from experience, but the pause duration seems to be related to the amount of water which exists - and the largest section of ocean is in the process on unfreezing at the moment. Small sections of ocean have already melted earlier (causing shorter hangs), but they were trivial compared to the largest chunk of ocean which I'm assume is currently in the process of melting. ...and it's still frozen... think I'll go get a drink. Ahha, it finally unfroze! The ocean eventually melted after around 10 minutes of churning my CPU. This is, unfortunately, easily repeatable.
Steps To Reproduce | Play on a temperate ocean map.

I'm really tempted to say this is a duplicate of 0001899, but I can't confirm that all the details are the same in the two cases in 0001899 and this case. |

I've also encountered this, my brook thawing takes several minutes. I'm running on a high-end gaming laptop, and the brook isn't that long. While it's not too bad for me, it has to be terrible for people with more water or slower computers. |

I believe I also have this problem, and as mentioned in another report someone also thinks that mining designations on several Z levels seem to contribute, also that pathing might be involved as some of the partial lockups seem to happen when there would be a major pathing change i.e. a major doorway is forbidden. I have a save game from Mayday DFG31-05 where the game completly locks up, full processor usage and memory approaching 2gb, as soon as it is unpaused. I can load the savegame and while it is paused I can do anything I want, but as soon as it unpauses, the dwarved take 2 steps and then the game locks up, prior savegames would lock up semi regularly and then unlock in 10-20 seconds, but this savegame only unlocks for 2 steps every few minutes. Otherwise I have had no perceptible slowdowns while playing on this map. Savegame available. Error log shows a repeating "shadow haunt" path fail as it is trying to leave the map. |

I had thought my ocean fortress unplayable, figuring there was something hanging the game, and was going to enter a report until I accidentally left it going for something like 5 minutes (it was a smaller map) and realized it had started again. Yeah, those ice melts take for-ever. It was nice to realize it was just that, rather than a bugged map, causing it, though it would be nice to see it go away. |

running 0.31.16, i've had this happen on my latest fort. it has an ocean (with waves and all) and the game freezes for like a minute or two. i've dug like 80 z-levels with a spiral ramp and have no active burrows but have forbidden both my doors to outside (cause of the killer horses). |

It would be helpful to upload more saves that are about to lock up for a long time. http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] |
