Summary | 0003742: Dwarves use random stones
Description | Whenever I order my dwarves to do something that requires stones (loading catapults, stonecrafting, anything where I cannot designate specific stones to use), my dwarves seem to pick stones entirely at random. Even when there is a perfectly good stockpile of (for example) microcline right next to them, they will travel halfway across the map to grab a functionally identical piece of microcline to use. The only remedy for these seems to be locking them in a room with the workshop and the material I want them to use. Please fix this and make dwarves smart enough to use the stones closest to them, rather than entirely random stones.
Steps To Reproduce | Happens at random, sometimes they grab nearby stones, other times they'll go across the map for one.

Are you sure they are actually travelling halfway across the map for stones, or are they going after the stones that are the shortest x-y distance from their previous position, ignoring z-axis travel distance? IE:
And the dwarf is getting T preferentially to S? |

I posted this issue many months ago, Toady has never managed to reproduce it, despite many DF players observing it. The problem with it is it's almost impossible to consistently reproduce. |

Bug 0001074 is the one you're looking for, related at least. (how do you put the link inline, by the way?) |

I think links are #xxx, so, 0001074 ? (hope that worked). And yes, it's not a matter of going for rocks directly above them. I set up a stockpile where I have my workshops set up to accept stones from the workshops that dont use them (to free up room for their rooms to stockpile other things). These workshops were very close by, farthest point was 25-X and 11-Y away from the stockpile. My dwarves went up above ground to a pile of rocks my miners had dug out for other purposes, rocks no closer than 30-X and 24-Y away. |

If you've got a save and some instructions that can reliably reproduce this for us that'd be great, twilighdusk. Edit; same goes for you kingdoom, if you could put that in your bug report. |

Well, here's the save file if you want to examine it. The workshops should be easy enough to spot, the stockpiles in question are in the rooms that the mechanic and masonry workshops are. I noticed my haulers taking rocks 1 z-level up and much farther away where my miners were digging into the mountain to the north (for material for the floor covering my farm, should be easy enough to spot). http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VGPYJW0D [^] |

I'm downloading your save so I can reupload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] (megaupload will remove your file before Toady can look at it) and then I'll post the link at 0001074. |
