Summary | 0009546: Obsidian casting creates sand floors
Description | I've been building a large ... box. My goal was to fill this box with obsidian, by alternatingly pumping water and magma into it. This has taken quite a while, but now my box is 80x60x23z levels high, and both pump stacks are functional. Casting works as normal, and generates obsidian walls and obsidian floors on top of them. However, digging out the actual fortress in the obsidian changes the floors to soil. Since my box extends into z=-3, I thought it would be due to the z-levels reverting back to the soil type (even though the walls are solid obsidian), so I ignored it. But I'm now up to z=5, and I'm still getting soil! Apparently, this biome has white sand on z=5. The order of water first or magma first doesn't seem to matter; all produces soil. This cannot be intended behaviour. Right?
Steps To Reproduce | 1) Dig out a block OR Make a block box (above z=0) 2) Pump in magma(or water) 3) Pump in water(or magma) 4) dig out a tile of obsidian, which makes the soil appear

That is the current behavior, intended or not. It's been said there is a hidden soil type associated with the levels above ground, revealed when you obsidianize/channel. The best you can do currently is to make an obsidian floor on top of the sand. As an aside, my experiment with the phenomenon indicated obsidian-> soil at the original surface level allowed a very sparse growth of herbs, but no saplings, while above ground supported grass only. Farming works as normal, although it's not completely guaranteed the surface biome reigns at higher Z levels. Also, the surface level (which lay on top of a constructed floor) wasn't uniformly sand, but sand with patches of obsidian, just as the natural surface. Obsidianizing the ocean shore resulted in the same kind of stone as the ocean shore was made of. |

Quickly checked; the non-sand tiles are indeed obsidian. Plants work as normal, it seems, which kinda makes sense since the other biome properties (latitude, temperature, rainfall, etc.) should be the same. I think this used to work differently, so it might be an intended change, but it seems odd. |

Sorry for the duplicate. How does one search for a term on the bug tracker? And, while I'm asking questions; are the email reminders not working or something? |

You can search on the View Issues page. Make sure that you click on the reset filters button first to remove any searches you might have performed, then type in your search terms. 'Obsidian' and 'sand' gives me 11 results, including this one and 0008444. I'm not certain about email reminders - I don't think I've had problems with those I sent out. |
